Road bikes. What you need to know

If you like to have a bike to ride exclusively on asphalt, very fast and over long distances, then you need a road bike.

These bikes are designed for long distance riding and exercise as well as racing, they usually have a lightweight frame and the riding position allows you to be more aerodynamic.

The material used in the frame construction of road bikes, like other bikes, varies depending on their cost.
Today, road bikes are made from one or a mixture of the following four materials:

Steel = durable, cheap, good handling, susceptible to rust.
Aluminum = is the most widely used bicycle frame material, lightweight, does not rust, economical.
Titanium = durable, lighter, harder, more expensive.Carbon fiber or carbon = too light, harder, tougher, more durable, more expensive.

A road bike usually has narrow and smooth high-pressure tyres, which minimise contact with the road to have the minimum possible rolling resistance. Most bikes have wheels that are technological marvels. Much prettier, more aerodynamic, durable, and much lighter. When a wheel is lighter, it automatically improves the bike's uphill performance, acceleration, and handling while riding.

The handlebars on the road bike have a special shape (spinning) to mainly allow you to go very fast. The grips are such that they give you a very aerodynamic riding position. But you can also sit in a more upright position, with your hands on the top of the handlebars. On the steering wheel you'll find the brake callipers and gear levers. It's all so simple and functional.

The way the road bike is designed, it allows you to lean forward, reducing your profile and therefore air resistance. At the same time, this position allows you to push with maximum power from your legs and hips through the pedals.

The speeds on road bikes have a wide range that allow you to climb hills and quite high, with gear options that really get you going fast. Typically a road bike has a double or triple disc in the front drivetrain along with eight to eleven gears in the rear wheel cassette. This construction allows you from 16 to 33 possible gear combinations. Keep in mind that for front drives, the higher the number of teeth, the harder it is to pedal. The smaller the number of teeth, the easier the pedaling. The exact opposite is true for the rear gears. The higher the number the easier the shoeing and vice versa.

Road bikes are equipped with pedals that clip onto a cycling shoe for better foot stability.
Today, bicycle manufacturers offer a wide range of models at various prices which can satisfy all pockets. Prices start from 550 euros on aluminium bikes and above. The three companies that manufacture road bike parts are Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo.

Choose the right road bike.

The first thing to look for when buying a road bike is to get one that fits your needs. Go to a specialist shop that has a measuring machine and knows which size is right for you, as we are all different when it comes to crotch height, torso height, limb length. It is also important that the shop you buy from can offer service or repair in case of a possible breakdown. From a technical point of view, go for a good frame rather than expensive peripherals. It is better to buy a good frame and then upgrade the peripherals (brakes, wheels, saddle, etc.).

The benefits of aerobic exercise are so many if you take up road cycling.
Road cycling can improve physical endurance and cardiorespiratory function more than running.

It is a fact that cycling - and aerobic exercise in general - is one of the best solutions to combat the stress and anxiety created by today's fast-paced lifestyle. Road cycling - especially in parks and country roads in the countryside - creates a sense of well-being and freedom and can be one of the best stress relievers.

Road cycling does not strain the joints of the body. Unpaved routes do not transfer shocks to the knees and ankles. With road cycling you are not only exercising your lower body and limbs, but your whole body.

Road cycling is the ultimate bike for all ages and all tastes. Sooner or later... many people come to this conclusion since road bikes (or road racers) are the ultimate two-wheelers, the ambassadors of cycling, the objects of our passion..
