City Bikes. What you need to know
City bicycles, as is obvious from their name, have been designed to promote comfortable and practical mobility within cities, with the best possible performance.
It has large wheels, with wide and smooth tires that help the cyclist move faster through the city that has good pavement. It offers great comfort since it has a wide saddle, gears, rack, chain guard, mudguards, bell and lights.
Several models are foldable so as to make it easier for the rider when transporting them, especially when using public transport.
Ideal for use in the city are folding or folding bicycles with 16, 20 or 26 inch wheels. Easy to transport and park, they can follow you on public transport, stairs and lifts.
Wheels
There are bikes with 26 and 28 inch wheels. Wheels with a diameter of 26 inches are more flexible in motion and move more easily in the classic stop-start.
Tires
The tires on city bikes are generally as smooth as possible, without heels. Thick tires, similar in thickness to those on mountain bikes, ensure comfort when riding, while thin ones roll more easily and maintain high speeds easily.
Suspension
Although the trend is to put front suspension on most city bikes, testing shows that this is not necessary.
Speeds
The city bike is good to have gears. It doesn't matter much whether they are 7 or 27, but they should be there. 3 is marginal and may seem minimal when the route has the slightest uphill. 7-8 are considered satisfactory and will not seem few for most routes. The classic 21 is fine and gives us a lot of options (such as slowing down when we get to work to get a little fatigue).
Brakes
The classic v-brakes are enough for all purposes. There are disc brakes on some bikes, which according to the sellers "brake better in the rain", but they are not worth the extra cost nor the extra weight for city use.
Saddle
The saddle is comfortable. There is no need for it to be lightweight. It should be like an isosceles triangle with thick pads. For extra comfort, the saddle nose may also have a suspension. This makes the ride even easier and it's an expense to take advantage of its potential, so it's definitely worth it.
Accessories
The city bike is equipped with many accessories.
Fenders: they are essential if we move not only in the rain but also on wet roads. Racks: are essential although they cannot easily carry many items.
Something that no city bike lacks is the plastic protector for the chain and the disc. Besides the fact that it can get our pants dirty, it can even tear.
A bell or a horn of some kind: it better be handy and loud to be heard in the city jungle!
